Most pros today use the Adobe Creative Suite--Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. Some do page layout in QuarkXpress instead of InDesign.

3D graphics are usually created in one of the high-end programs, such as 3ds Max, Lightwave or Maya.

NCH Software offers a free graphic editor called DrawPad.

Before computers, text was set by hand, layouts were cut and pasted by hand, and every visual effect was done in the physical realm. Nowadays, computers have helped remove a lot of the tedium of design and layout. In a generic sense, computers help in the typesetting of text, the layout of pages, the editing of photographs, etc. In a more detailed sense, the precision of computers have allowed processes like letter-kerning and page flowing more automated (and perhaps less 'perfect'), and complex layouts and illustrations that would otherwise be impossible to create by hand.

A graphic designer should know all of the Adobe products as they are the industry standard. At the very least a designer should be very experienced in Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. A designer should also be good with the various software that is used for digital cameras, scanners, and the like when uploading images into their computers. Quark Xpress is losing its spot as a top layout system, and Adobe InDesign has taken over.

If you do bookwork, learn Microsoft Office too--a lot of copy comes in that way, and my favorite way to deal with said copy is to insert character and paragraph formatting tags in Word, save as ASCII text and import.
