They could be in any type of band. Train includes an ukulele in their instruments (Hey, Soul Sister).

There have been a number of periods in which the ukulele sort of fell out of popularity. In the 30's it was pushed aside by jazz and then the big band sound. It re-surged during the 40's and 50's to fall out of favor with rock and roll. It is currently extremely popular and is seeing record sales around the world.
Not normally. The typical ukulele player is going to strum between the neck and the sound hole. With the instrument sort of 'pinched' between the forearm and side of your body, you'll find that your hand sort of naturally falls in the area.
The ukulele becomes a sort of lever. The fulcrum is going to be the belly or chest of the player. The right forearm pushes at the base and the left fingers on the fretboard are on the other side.
It will depend partially on the type of sound one is looking for. Train uses a Tenor sized ukulele, but a concert size would also be a good fit.
People of the same sort are usually found together.
NeverShoutNever! is a band where christofer drew is the only member. He sings, plays guitar, and occasionally plays his ukulele.
