Loki's current status as a god is "dead"! He was slain during the battle of Ragnarok by Heimdall, who was also fatally wounded in the confrontation. In the time of the Norse gods, Loki was the personification of both benign and malevolent mischief, deception, slyness and in extreme cases, evil. He was a master of disguise and could change his form at will in order to fool potential targets of his mischief. Underlying all this, Loki was, at first accepted warmly by the other gods in Asgard as one of their own kin. He showed them that he had the potential to be good and Time after time he tricked them and still they welcomed him because of this. However, Some of the gods were debilitatingly injured by Lokis pranks and evil-doings and eventually he was exiled from Asgard for good. He attempted to rejoin his fellow Aesir several times by cunning, and was prevented by Heimdall, the sentry of Bifrost, the rainbow bridge that spanned the only access between Midgard and Asgard. When living in the world of men he would lure them into commiting evil deeds against one another. Eventually this conspired with other factors to undermine the gods in the eyes of their followers. The Eddas and Sagas refer to these times as the Years of Encroaching Darkness; a time when people were badly off and full of greed and hate and fear. Various summary texts have suggested that these events were actually caused by a gradual assimilation into Christianity. These times were also known as "The Twilight of the gods". At this point, Loki went to dwell in Niflheim with his evil spawn, Hel, Garm and Fenris (Fenrir). There they grew ever stronger until the time of the final battle on the field of Vigrid, where lay the fate of all the gods, giants and men, save a small handfull, who went on to repopulate the heavens and the earth.
