The basic unit of currency is the dollar. It's divided into 100 cents.

Coins are :

1 cent, copper-plated zinc, images : President Abraham Lincoln and the Lincoln Memorial building

5 cents ("nickel") - copper-nickel alloy, images : President Thomas Jefferson and his home, Monticello

10 cents ("dime") - copper-nickel cladding on a pure copper core, images - President Franklin Roosevelt, oak leaves, torch

25 cents ("quarter") - copper-nickel cladding on a pure copper core, images - President George Washington, U.S. eagle or scenes from U.S. states and territories.

50 cents ("half") - copper-nickel cladding on a pure copper core, images - President John Kennedy, U.S. eagle.

$1 ("buck") - manganese-brass, images - Native American guide Sacagawea or images of other presidents.

Bills are:

$1 ("buck") - Green and black, images - President George Washington, various symbols of the country's founders

$2 - Green and black, images - President Thomas Jefferson, the signing of the Declaration of Independence

$5 - Gray, purple, and green, images : President Abraham Lincoln and the Lincoln Memorial building

$10 - Red, orange, and yellow, images : Treasury Secretary (= Finance Minister) Alexander Hamilton, the U.S. Treasury building

$20 - Blue, green, and peach, images : President Andrew Jackson and the White House

$50 - Red, white, blue; images : President Ulysses Grant, the U.S. Capitol building

$100 - Green and black (but new colors due out soon); images - American scientist and Founder Benjamin Franklin, Independence Hall.
