Deer have a somewhat large vocabulary. They use grunts and snorts of several kinds. A Buck will use it's antlers rubbing a tree or shaking a bush or sapling to show other bucks how big andtough he is. Deer will also stomp the ground or a tree root to alert other deer in the area. The grunts sound a lot like pigs. I was in a tree stand at night just listening- there were approximately 20 deer around the stand. It sounded like a pig pen. A large buck came in and gave two long deep grunts and the group ran for cover.

White-tailed deer have two different coats of hair during the year. The gray winter coat is comprised of longer guard hairs and a soft wooly underfur that provide insulation from the cold. This thicker winter coat is shed prior to the hot summer months. This shorter summer coat is reddish-brown and lacks the thick insulating underfur. The summer coat hairs are short and wiry. A genetic defect produces a few white-tailed deer that are brown and white spotted, similar to a pinto horse. These white-tailed deer are called piebald. In addition to the coloration deficiency, many piebald deer have skeletal deformities such as short legs, bowing of the nasal bone, arching of the back bone and heart defects. Piebald deer make up less than one percent of white-tailed deer herds. and yes
"White-tailed" refers to the distinctive white tail that when raised is a flag and provides a flash of white, signaling other deer when there is danger. Deer are graceful and swift runners (up to 35 miles per hour), but do not generally run long distances, preferring to seek the nearest shelter whenever possible. Male deer are called "bucks", females "does" and baby deer "fawns". These deer tend to live in female-led family groups of up to 25 deer and may live to ten years or more.

The difference between mule deer and white tale deer is that mule deer are slightly larger than white tales and live in colder areas. The white tale deer's tale is white on the end and the mule deer's is black. Mule deer have more of a brown gray color and the white tale is more red.

"Deer" is a category of animals, not a single species. Some species (e.g. the White-tailed deer mentioned below and the Mule deer) are classified as "Least Concern" by the IUCR (which is as close as the IUCR ever gets to saying "those things? endangered? don't make me laugh"), though others such as the Hog deer are classified as endangered. Hunting animals does not mean they are endangered..The whitetailed deer, is more plentiful than ever, with a total North American population of nearly 40 million.
