Seven of them seceded before a shot was fired - South Carolna, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida.

After the attack on Fort Sumter, and Lincoln's appeal for volunteer-troops, four more joined them - North Carlina, Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas.

That left four slave-states of the Upper South that remained loyal - Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland, Delaware.
