an alkali

My answer will be a little more detailed than the previous. First you need know what acid you are dealing with. A response to the question who do you raise the PH of Nitric Acid? The response was you add water, which is somewhat correct but barely. We use two different chemicals to adjust PH in acids. Lets say we have a batch of Nitric Acid at 3ph and we need to get it to 7. Very carefully if you are doing this manually you will need to add Sodium Hydroxide AKA caustic soda. In the industry this is the go to chemical to raise the PH. BE CAREFUL caustic hurts like a you know what if you get it on you, I once got it in my eye. Not fun!. When adding the caustic do it slowly and mix the acids like you would a sauce. Add small drops of it. Adding a lot within seconds will bring the PH to 11. Thats called overshooting. If you overshoot. Follow the same procedure as I mentioned but switch the caustic with hydrocloric acid. Caustic raised the PH, Hydro lowers it.

Bases such as:

sodium hydroxide

potassium hydroxide

other hydroxides

also, non-hydroxides such as:

sodium carbonate

ammonia

Or (solid) metals that will form hydroxides such as:

Sodium

Potassium

etc...

You will never get hold of the solid metals on your own, they are extremely dangerous and will literally explode when in touch with water--In order to completely answer you question though, i found it necessary! You will probably be using this for class or a pool, so stick to adding solutions of hydroxides, that is the easiest answer

These substances added to a solution will raise the pH. Remember not to add these substances to acids. Leave that to experienced chemists and people who are trained to handle chemicals.

Using common household chemicals as an example, to change a solution to become more acid, you could add vinegar, to change a solution to move to more of an alkaline you could add baking soda.

Adding an Acid will decrease your pH but a base will increase your pH. So you could add bases, Adding bases should increase the pH but who knows i'm only a 8th grader lol!

In order to raise the pH level of a substance, one would need to add a base to it. Some examples of bases are: sodium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, sodium carbonate.

Add a base. Or dilute it.

But make sure to add the correct amount, because Superman will beat you if you don't

What environmental factors could cause soil to be acidic?

As the amount of hydrogen ions in the soil increases the soil pH decreases thus becoming more acidic.

How does alkali help to treat acidic soil?

A soil is acidic because there are compounds within it which dissolve in water to form an acid. An acid is defined as a substance which readily gives out protons to oter molecules. An alkali is the converse, in that it is a proton acceptor and readily takes on protons. Treating an acidic soil with an alkali would neutralise the soil, and so the soil would become less acidic. If enough alkali is added, the soil will become neutral, and it will become alkaline if even more alkali is added.

What may cause soil to get too acidic?

Sometimes there could be too much aluminum in the soil making it acidic. Sometimes there is too much manganese which is toxic to plants. If the soil is too acidic, it can be because of a calcium and magnesium deficiency which is just as bad for plants as it is for humans. Iron and aluminum in great amounts can tie up phosphorus which also makes the soil too acidic for plants.
