Do you mean, Why does nutmeg taste weird? it is a tropical spice grow in warm climates. Often used in eggnog this spice is very popular. Different spices can taste strange to different people, because 1) everyone's palate is (genetically) different, and 2) if you're not used to it, it very well may not agree with you. Additionally, most spices in their concentrated form are very pungent and aromatic, and eating them by themselves is going to taste weird, among other things.
For me, the best spice after salt and pepper, is GARLIC!
The most popular spice in the us is the peper.
Saunf, or fennel, is an herb; but it is used for spice purposes.
