the difference is that white light is a mixture of the seven spectrum colors but when refracted (separated by a transparent object) it splits again into seven colors striking at different angles that's why they look like one.one color above others.so the difference is that spectrum is a number of split colors striking at different angles but white light is the mixture of those colors.

I am only an eighth grader, but read my answer. So, when the visible light passes through the prim and refracts on it's edges, the beam of light splits into a spectrum and it looks like a rainbow, only because white light is acctually all of the colors of light put together. Type your answer here... OK. White light is made of the colours of the spectrum (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet - these are the same as the colours of the rainbow). The reason you see these colours instead of wwhite when you shine white light through a prism is that the prism "bends" the light - which splits it into the colours of the spectrum. Red light is the longest, so it is bent the least, and Violet is the shortest - so it is bent the most. This is also how rainbows are made - the rain droplets act as prisms to disperse (split) the light into the colours of the spectrum.
