The most common machines bombing Britain were the Luftwaffe's many squadrons of twin engine medium bombers, Heinkel 111's, Dornier 215's and 217's. Stukas were there too, but not in such huge numbers as the Heinkel.
There are many single engine aircraft used as dive bombers and torpedo bombers that could be cited if this were the aim of the question - was it?
The function of bombers is to bomb the enemy.
No. Carrier Air Groups usually consisted of four squadrons, one of fighters, one of torpedo bombers, one of dive bombers, and another of dive bombers designated as a "scouting" squadron, which latter was used for reconnaissance flights from the carrier, and to add strength to the attack as dive bombers. VP squadrons operated aircraft which were too large for carrier operations in those days, when carriers did not have catapults, and the large patrol planes did not have folding wings. Patrol squadrons usually had PBY Catalina Flying Boats, of the Navy version of the B-24 bomber, or the Lockheed Electra, or the Hudson. These aircraft could range out many hundreds of miles from their bases and remain in the air for ten to fourteen hours. Carrier aircraft, which were necessarily of restricted size, generally could go out around 200 miles and return to their ship.
The aircraft photos and the types of weapons used were how the B-24 bombers were identified in the World War II.
The Germans and the allies had bombers in WWI, but not in great numbers. The bomber came into its own in WWII.
fighters,bombers,and cargo planes primarily.
Bombers are used to drop bombs on targets below. They are used as an offensive weapon.
Originally used for interception of bombers. All (except the F105 Thunderchief) were designed & built for intercepting Soviet bombers in the 1950s. All (including the F105) were used as both fighters & bombers in the Viet War, thus the term "fighter bombers."
at the start of the war only 25lb bombs were used, later 50lbs on fighter bombers in 1939, 100lbs bombs of light bombers such as the mosquito, 200lbs bombs on a mix of planes and later ww2 fighter bombers such as the tempest, 250lbs were used on a range of role, 500lbs on medium bombers, 1000lbs on heavy bombers, 2000lbs on heavy bombers, 8000lbs on the Lancaster, 12,000lb earthquake bombs on specially outfitted Lancaster, 22,000lb bombs on specially outfitted Lancaster
bombers were useful in the WW2 because they were used to create fear among the people and destroy key points in towns and citys it was basicly a demoriliser with a nasty sting
In Europe in World War 1. Scouts (with the observer throwing the bombs by hand) and zeppelins were used as bombers, but before the end of the war the bomber had evolved into a task-oriented war machine.
