The "star" at Jesus's birth was a new star - the North Star was known for centuries by then.
His birth was foretold by prophets and angels, a new star appeared in the sky, a choir of angels told some shepherds nearby. Probably some other things I'm forgetting too.
Wise men from the East were guided by the star (Matthew 2:1, 2).Angels announced Christ's birth to the shepherds and told them where they would find the babe (Luke 2:8-12).
It started in the Victorian era with the Royals when they put angels on their Christmas trees. The star represented the star of Bethlehem, and the angel represented an angel proclaiming the birth of Jesus.
