The Communist party was the binding agent between the areas making up this nation. When the communist party fell, it caused these independence acts.

In 1991, four states of Yugoslavia declared their independence. These states are Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Macedonia. Serbia and Montenegro were also former states.

This requires a fairly long explanation. But, here are the highlights: After Boris Yeltsin allowed the collapse of the Soviet Union the Soviet Republics declared their independence. But, Chechnya was not considered a Soviet Republic. Rather it was a part of the Russian Federation of republics. But, they hated Russia and declared their independence too. Yeltsin feared the secession of Chechnya would prompt a me-too of independence movements within the vast Russian Federation. In addition he hoped to recover Chechnya's valuable oil resources.
It hasn't it is still a part of Russia till this day.
LITHUANIA IN 1990
The immediate actions were the declarations of independence of almost all of the former soviet republics, all republics that wanted to stay with russia were annexed into russia and those that wanted independence instead became independent countries.
None of Russian Republics want to gain independance from Russia.
