After WW1 Germany was not allowed any arms, i.e. weapons. However, in 1935 Hitler started re-arming Germany. He re-took the Rhineland with troops, and wasn't stopped by the British or French, even though it was part of the peace treaty of 1918. He then invaded Czechoslovakia in 1938, moving into Poland in 1939, when the Allies finally reacted and declared war on Germany.
