Well, "The Westing Game" was published in 1978, and based on the events in the novel probably took place sometime in the 1970s. There are never any explicit references to dates, but Sam Westing was a self-made man from a family of immigrants, which makes it likely that he grew up early in the 20th century or sometime late in the 19th century.
The doorman didn't take the tip because he was part of the mystery set up by the game's creator, Sam Westing. It was a clue meant to lead the heirs to uncover the secrets of the Westing estate and ultimately solve the puzzle of who would inherit Sam Westing's fortune.
Turtle took the broken shorthand typewriter upstairs to protect herself in the Westing Game. She believed that it could be used as a weapon if necessary.
Alexander suffers from bad headaches in The Westing Game because he is stressed and anxious about his daughter's safety and the mysterious events surrounding Sam Westing's death. The pressure of solving the puzzle and the fear of losing the inheritance take a toll on his health, leading to the headaches.
