To give one example (from baseball), there have been "subway series" between teams who are at least nominally from the same city, for example the Cubs and the White Sox or the Yankees and the (Brooklyn) Dodgers.
Generally if there are multiple teams in the same city they are not in the same league, though, so usually this only happens after the intra-league playoffs are complete.
