Why is there an emblem on only one side of the Pittsburgh Steelers helmet?

  • Click on the links below to find out about the history of the Steelers logo.
  • The Steelers are the only NFL Team that sports their logo on only one side of the helmet. At first, this was a temporary measure because the Steelers weren't sure they would like the look of the logo on an all-gold helmet. They wanted to test them before going all-out.
  • Equipment manager Jack Hart was instructed to put the logo only on one side of the helmet - the right side. The 1962 Steelers finished 9-5 and became the winningest team in franchise history to date. The team finished second in the Eastern Conference and qualified for the Playoff Bowl. They wanted to do something special for their first postseason game, so they changed the color of their helmets from gold to black, which helped to highlight the new logo.
  • Because of the interest generated by having the logo on only one side of their helmets and because of their team's new success, the Steelers decided to leave it that way permanently.Today's helmet reflects the way the logo was originally applied and it has never been changed.
  • The answer can be obtained from the official web site of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Click on the links below.
  • They used to have there player's numbers on the other side, in the early days.
  • When they first decided to use the logo, their helmets were gold. The equipment manager decided to only use one logo because he wasn't sure how it would look. After they changed the helmets to black, they decided to stick with the one logo look.
  • In 1960, the upstart AFL put pressure on NFL teams to wear helmet logos like they did. The New York Giants, Green Bay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers and other NFL started wearing logos only on one side of the helmet in 1961, because they were cheap and didn't want to hire more equipment managers to keep up with the time consuming job done. Some NFL teams like the Colts started wearing helmet logos starting in 1954 and used both sides of the helmet since 1957. The fact the Steelers kept the logo on the right side today has more to do with style nowadays.
  • The U.S. Navy enlisted personnel wear the logo on one side - they used to wear ranking on both shoulders, but cost reasons caused them to switch to one shoulder. NFL teams can afford the decay expenses nowadays.
