Bank of America was bought by Nations Bank, and the 'Bank of America' name was kept. Nations Bank used to be North Carolina National Bank, before that. I don't know if the name change to Nations was due to a merger or if they just wanted to sound less 'regional'. According to the related link, the Corporate headquarters for B of A, is in Charlotte, North Carolina.
