∙ 11y agoSouth Carolina was the first (December 20th 1860). Six more followed at short intervals before the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter (April 12th 1861).
After that, the undecided states of the Upper South had to declare for one side or the other. Four of them went Confederate, and the other four stayed loyal.
