As soon as Mexico became independent from Spain in 1821, it abolished slavery in most of its territories; however it wasn't explicitly stated in its constitution until 1833. This change in the constitution was one of the causes the Texian settlers started to conspire for the Texas independence -- most Texians were slave owners.
The Compromise of 1850. California was admitted as a free state, and the New Mexico, Utah, Nevada and Arizona territories were all allowed to decide by popular sovereignty if they would be admitted as free or slave states. The compromise also included the Fugitive Slave Act.
It basically stated that if Mexico aided Germany in the attack on the southern U.S., Mexico would be given back lost territory including parts of Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas. another thing that the letter sated is that the Germans would help Mexico if they them fight the u.s.
