Nine western states had portions of their state in the Mormon Provisional State of Deseret. Washington and Montana were not. Therefore 41 states were not part of the Provisional State of Deseret.
Mormon leaders suggested a state named Deseret that would cut into large portions of all the states that surround Utah.
Many if not most of the cities and towns along the "Mormon curtain" - Utah, Idaho, Arizona - were founded by Mormon settlers in the mid 1800's. The Mormons are sometimes attributed as the founders of Utah, but this is a bit of a misconception. Yes Mormons created the first permanent white settlements in the area, but the state they wished to establish was called Deseret and much larger, covering much of Wyoming, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. At one point, this "state" of Deseret was essentially it's own country, with it's own government system, money, and language. The people who lived there were mostly American citizens living as refugees on Mexican soil. After acquiring the land from Mexico after the Mexican-American war, the federal government denied the Mormon's proposal of Deseret, drew the current state boundaries, gave the states their names, and appointed governors for those states. So, the Mormons founded Deseret, but the US Government founded Utah.
There is no state of Deseret. The state was proposed in 1849, and provisional for about two years, but never recognized by the United States. The proposed state encompassed almost all of Nevada and Utah, more than half of Arizona, and parts of California, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, and New Mexico.
No. The Mormon pioneers established many cities, towns, and settlements in the 1800's, mostly in the western US. They proposed a state called Deseret which was cut in half and renamed Utah by the United States government.
Important icon in the Mormon religion that is depicted on the state flag. The beehive became the official state emblem on March 4, 1959. Utahans relate the beehive symbol to industry and the pioneer virtues of thrift and perseverance. The beehive was chosen as the emblem for the provisional State of Deseret in 1848 and was maintained on the seal of the State of Utah when Utah became a state in 1896.
