Most states do not require registration of firearms, with the exception of NFA firearms, such as machine guns. When purchasing a firearm from a dealer, the dealer must maintain a record of the sale, but there is no registration per se. Welcome to the South, y'all!
When purchasing from a dealer, you will provide the dealer with at least 2 pieces of ID that show who you are, that you are of legal age, and reside in Alabama. You will complete an ATF form 4473 that the dealer provides, answering the questions on points that would make you unable to legally purchase the gun. The dealer conducts an on-line background check for criminal history, or persons that have been adjudged mentally incompetent (and unable to own a gun). That generally takes about 10 minutes. If the background check is approved, you pay the dealer, take your gun, leave.
Check with your local or state Alabama law enforcement agencies.
