The blues originated from mainly west african pentatonic based music combined with western harmony(chordal based music). It was the descendents of slaves who worked in the cotton fields and sugar cane plantations that started combining their native pentatonic based melodies with chords and harmony they were able to play on western instruments like Guitars and pianos. Blues is a very raw emotional form of music with a very strong harmonic and rhythmic tension associated with it that reflected the hardships of the people that grew up and lived in and around the Mississippi delta area during the early 1900's. Blues is very unique and earthy and wasn't so much created from a fushion of styles but more from circumstance. It was bred from nature. - Emile Gerber
