Mandela's father, Gadla Henry Mphakanisywa, was chief of the town of Mvezo. Mandela's father had 4 wives and 13 children, 4 boys and 9 girls. Mandela was born to his third wife, Nosekeni Fanny. Mandela spent most of his childhood with his mother. He became the first member of his family to attend a school, where his teacher gave him the English name Nelson. When he was 9 his fater died of tuberculosis. After that Mandela attended a mission school. According to Thembu custom he was initiated at the age of 16. Mandela then completed his Junior Certificate in 2 years instead of the normal 3 years. After school Mandela began to study for a Bachelor in Arts at Fort Hare University.
