∙ 12y agoCockatiel dietary requirements are what your cockatiel requires in its diet to be a healthy bird. Cockatiels should have a wide range of vegetables available to it. Bird seeds are a treat and you should supply lots of vegetables to your cockatiel/s.
Cockatiels love lettuce, just don't give them too much otherwise the lettuce will act as a laxative.
Vegetables which are good for your cockatiel:
- Carrots
- Brocolli
- Peas
- Lettuce
- Some cockatiels also like apple
DO NOT feed your cockatiel avocado or tomato. If unsure about a certain vegetable, be on the safe side and don't give it to your cockatiel.

∙ 12y agoYou need a cage, toys, food and be prepared to pay for vet bills.
You absolutely need a book about cockatiels which you can refer to if you have any questions about cockatiel behaviour, food or anything else.
You also need a few first aid supplies. Your local pet store will stock these items and you can ask for assistance.
You will also need a sheet to cover the cage at night, newspaper or normal paper to put at the bottom of the cage, perches and food and water containers.
Most things you will need can be found at a pet store.

Before a cockatiel is purchased it is best to study up on information about them, purchase a cage, various cage supplies such as food bowls and water trays, maintaining a healthy diet for the cockatiel and teaching the cockatiel to talk and whistle.

∙ 9y agoAt the bare MINIMUM, your cockatiel needs a playmate, preferably another cockatiel, food, water, AT LEAST two or three perches and AT LEAST one or two toys. But, your cockatiels will be much more happy if they have more perches and toys to play on. :)

Why is your cockatiel not very tame?
Cockatiels are wild birds so if they were never tamed when they were young, they will still be untame. It is easier to tame a young cockatiel, however with the right attitude, you can tame an adult cockatiel. You have to start with trust. Taming a cockatiel take a while and one wrong move could ruin all your work. Start with standing next to the cage and talking to your bird. Do this for about a week so your cockatiel gets to know your voice and is calmer around you. Then you could try putting a fresh vegetable (in your hand) next to the cockatiel and hold it there. Don't force the cockatiel to get closer to your hand - this will scare him/her. You need to earn trust. Eventually, your cockatiel will be comfortable with you having your hand near him/her. If you cockatiel is comfortable to actually eat from your hand, you can try picking it up. Do not grab our cockatiel on its back, try to persuade him/her to sit on your finger. Do not force your cockatiel to get onto your hand. This will ruin the trust. Eventually your cockatiel will be ready to sit on your finger and eventually your shoulder! It's all about trust and if you're cockatiel trusts you, it would love to sit on your shoulder!
