Power. The feudal systems involved aristocratic landlords giving landed estates (feuds) to lesser aristocrats and knights in exchange for political and military support. These people were called vassals and owed loyalty their feudataries. Since there were not centralised armies, soldiers were raised by the aristocrats and giving land to vassals ensured that military services would be provided to them by the vassals.
Knights would most commonly trade military service for land known as fiefs from their sprawling estates.
They were called latifundia
The First Estates was the Clergy; the Second Estates was the Aristocrats; and the Third Estates was the poor.
Middle Ages Feudalism was based on the exchange of land, called a fief, for military service. King William the Conqueror used the concept of feudalism to reward his Norman supporters for their help in the conquest of England. The land belonging to the English was taken and given to Norman Knights and Nobles. These estates were known as Manors.
