depends on what you want to never forget. if you want to make a stand on terrorism (bad example, but I'll finish), you might tattoo a well-known terror target (eg WTC), maybe even after it was hit (eg tower 1 burning and a plane on the way in to tower 2.), and a banner underneath that says "memento". "memento" is latin for a reminder/remember.
that's one way to do it.
or, you could just take a symbol and make it your own; I made a straight edge tattoo out of an anchor and a rope; the rope goes from the top, diagonally crossing the anchor, folds under the anchor, and diagonally crosses the anchor again on its way up, thereby forming an X. the anchor of course meaning that I'll stay straight edge.
that's how easy it's done. also, if you have doubts, talk to a tattoo artist. they know this stuff.
I'm not sure about forever but this here symbolizes infinity: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/dd/Infinity_symbol.svg
