The cotton gin led to slavery in the United States. As a hand processed item, cotton was too labor intensive to be highly profitable. After Whitney created the gin, it could be processed at much higher speeds, and became a very marketable product. The slaves were used to turn over high amounts of harvest at little cost to the plantation owner.
