We study the Romans and Greeks, because they were the foundation of our western culture. By understanding the Greco-Roman cultures, we get an understanding and insights into ourselves. We built on their accomplishments and hopefully, learn from their mistakes.
The Greeks could learn that Greece is not as big as the circumference of the Earth. This would lead to new countries, like America.
Usually through some sort of soothsaying, i.e. visiting an oracle or by reading "signs" like in Augury.
Greek intellectuals founded the ideas and theories we have in science and maths today. Without the Greeks, some of the key ideas about the beginnings of our universe may never have been discovered
