asthenosphere
The asthenosphere.
In the mantle, there is a fluid-like layer called the asthenosphere which has convection currents, due to the heat of the inner core. Earth's plates are hypothetically "floating" on the asthenosphere. The currents in this layer push whatever is on top of it, thus the continents move.
The asthenoshere acts like jello and allows the lithosphere, containing the plate, to move. Tectonic plates could not move without the asthenoshere.
The Athenosophere is the layer below the lithosphere in the mantle. It can bend like plastic, but if you kicked it, you would stub your toe.
It's where the plates of the lithosphere move around on, the plastic like layer of the asthenosphere. the plates move around on these
The asthenosphere is the thin sheet of plasticlike material that the plates "float" upon as they bump and slide into each other.
Asthenosphere
Together the crust and upper mantle are called the lithosphere and they extend about 80 km deep. The lithosphere is broken into giant plates that fit around the globe like puzzle pieces.

The asthenosphere.
There are actually at least 31 identified lithospheric plates, the plates consisting of crust and uppermost mantle which float on top of the plastic-like asthenosphere of the mantle.

A section of the lithosphere that slowly moves over the asthenosphere, carrying pieces of the continental and oceanic crust. A plate is part of dinnerware that is flat as opposed to round like a bowl.
There are two kinds of plates- continental lithosphere and oceanic lithosphere. There are many types of plate boundaries, like convergent, divergent, transform, and more. Continental lithosphere is granite and oceanic is basalt.
