Hi, Always interpoles are connected in series with armature. N.V.B.V. Prasada Rao
It's not.
speed of a dc motor can be varied by mainly two methods:- 1)field control method 2)armature control method further , field control method can be divided in 3 parts:- 1)field rhestat control method---speed variation is acomplished by means of a variable resistance inserted in series with shunt field 2)reluctance control method---by changing the reluctance of magnetic circuit by choosing right material.. 3) field voltage control method-requires variable field voltage supply. and armature control method can be divided in 3 parts :- 1)armature resistance control---variable resisitance connected in series with armature 2)shunted armature control. 3)armature voltage control. ------------mrityunjay pandey (kiit university ,btech 2nd year)
An emf is induced in a coil as a result of (1) a coil cutting through a magnetic field, or (2) a magnetic field cutting through a coil. As long as there is relative motion between a conductor and amagnetic field, a voltage will be induced in the conductor. That part of a generator that produces the magnetic field is called the field. That part in which the voltage is induced is called the armature. Forrelative motion to take place between the conductor and the magnetic field, all generators must have two mechanical parts - a rotor and a stator. The ROTor is the part that ROTates; the STATor is the part that remains STATionary. In a dc generator, the armature is always the rotor. In alternators, the armature may be either the rotor or stator. ROTATING-ARMATURE ALTERNATORSThe rotating-armature alternator is similar in construction to the dc generator in that the armature rotates in a stationary magnetic field as shown in figure 3-1, view A. In the dc generator, the emf generated in the armature windings is converted from ac to dc by means of the commutator. In the alternator, the generated ac is brought to the load unchanged by means of slip rings. The rotating armature is found only in alternators of low power rating and generally is not used to supply electric power in large quantities.
It depends on whether the field winding of the dc motor is connected in series or in shunt with the armature winding. If it is connected in series, the motor will rotate since the torque, which varies as the product of the armature and field current is always positive. Thus,a positive average torque causes the motor to rotate, however the pulsating nature may cause the commutator segments and brushes to wear out. Thus only small sized dc motors may be used with ac supply.

Commutating field windings are connected in series with the armature windings so that the current flowing in the coils is always equal to the armature current. The number of turns in the commutating field windings are also equal to the number of armature turns. This means that the field strength of the commutating windings and the field strength of the armature are always equal. A DC motor is constructed so that these two fields of equal strength oppose one another, they therefore cancel one another out. The main field is now unaffected by armature reaction.
For a D.C motor it is the field windings which must always be in series with the armature windings.
If a DC series motor is started without load, the armature winding (winding that doesn't spin) current will be at a minimum, resulting in the motor going to maximum speed / runaway, which can cause things to fly apart. As Armature current increases, the speed of the motor will decrease. The armature current will be forced to increase / speed of the motor will be forced to decrease as more and more load is applied.
