∙ 10y agoA butterfly is a flying insect of the order Lepidoptera. Its body is made up of a head, thorax and abdomen, and like all insects, it has six jointed legs. It has four wings which, together with the six legs, are attached to the thorax. A butterfly's wings are characterised by iridescent and colourful scales arranged in overlapping rows.
A butterfly fly begins life as an egg, which then hatches into a caterpillar, the larval stage. After a period of massive growth, it becomes a pupa, or chrysalis, from which emerges an adult butterfly.
There are an estimated 28,000 species of butterfly worldwide, andthey are found in a very wide range of habitats.
