Global warming as defined by the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the rise in the average temperature of the Earth that has been happening since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. The scientific consensus is that global warming is happening and it is being caused by anthropogenic means, that it, it is caused by man's actions, especially those that add to the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Man does this by the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) and by deforestation. Combustion of fossil fuels releases long-stored carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and deforestation has removed the carbon sinks of the great forests that used to absorb and store carbon.

This finding of the reality and causes of global warming is recognized by the national science academies of all the main industrialized countries.

Scientists measured the increase during the 20th century at about 0.74°C (1.33°F). The 2007 report of the IPCC estimates that future warming will be 3.4°C (6.1°F) by 2100. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change states that any rise above 2°C is above the threshold for dangerous climate change, and the warming will continue into the next century because of the length of time some greenhouse gases remain in the atmosphere.
