A long block comes with everything but the intake, Sometimes they will leave the sheet medal off, Oil pan,valve covers, Timing cover.
A short block will be just the block,crank,rods and pistons and cam shaft, Timing gears
No heads or sheet medal.

this is a mess of a question and the answer is NO. why? because there was never a big block 350 made by Chevrolet and as far as a short block 350 on the transmission? who cares rather the motor had heads or not (i.e. short block= crate motor sold without heads). if you asked me if a big block Chevy will bolt up to a transmission that came in a vehicle with a small block i would say yes.

I do not own a '96, but as on all small-block Chvy motors, I believe, it is located on the left rear side of the engine block. The filter is relativly short, and is between the engine block and the exhaust pipe coming off of the left side exhaust manifold.

The 5.7 heads will work if they have the smaller 184 intake valves . Or you will have to bore the block over to get the 194 ,200,or 202 intake valves to fit into the cylinder if not it will lock it up when the valve opens and hits the edge of the block
