Selection or 'Natural selection' means that the organisms that are better adapted to their environment are most likely to stay alive and produce offspring, while Variation means that during natural selection, the organism that is better adapted to the environment starts to form more physical features to help it survive (mutations).

For example,

Say that there was a white desert. If there were 2 mice, one species is black while the other is white, white would survive, which would be an example of Natural Selection. Variation is if, say, the mice are slow and can still be easy prey, but later on they mutate into becoming faster, that would be variation.

Why does evolution evolution by natural selection can not occur if the variation in a characteristic does not contribute to differences in fitness?

Differential selection is just that, differential. Some variation is marginally superior to another variation us fitness difference, so the key is to have variation. Then natural selection will " see " this slight variation and select the better adapted trait against the background of the immediate environment.

What do stabilization selection and disruptive selection have in common?

They both decrease genetic variation. Stabilizing selection and disruptive selection reduce genetic variation

How does genetic variation support Natural Selection?

Genetic variation in itself does not 'support' natural selection: it is what natural selection acts upon.

Is Natural selection a source of genetic variation in a population?

No, natural selection works on that genetic variation presented to it.

How does natural selection enhance or reduce the variability of a species?

Natural selection doesn't reduce variation. Variation is regulated by the rate of mutation.Natural selection reduces the chance of bad variation from being passed on and increases the chances for good variation to be passed on.

Type of selection in which human select the variation?

Artificial selection.

What characteristic within populations cause natural selection to occur?

Genetic variation. If there were no variation in the genes/phenotype then natural selection would have nothing to select from.

Why do populations of asexually reproduced organisms show little variation?

There is no natural selection and therefore no evolutionary need for a difference between genders.

What is genetic variation in natural selection?

Natural selection ' selects ' from among variations. Some organisms are better suited to their immediate environment and survive and out reproduce other organisms. All these organisms are genetically variant. That is the simple connection between natural selection and genetic variation. ( that variation coming about by mutation and recombination )

What principles includes variation and competition?

Natural selection.

Can natural selection occur without variation in a population?

no there is no genetic variation for natural selection to act upon

Which type of selection tends to increase genetic variation?

Natural Selection.
