Slaves in Athens and Sparta did not have a lot of rights. They where not even allowed to go to religious festivals and they had to ask their master's permission to even go to the bathroom!
Bore and raised children, kept house, supervised domestic slaves, worked in the vegetable garden, attended occasional women's religious festivals.

They were treated like crap and had no rights or a say in government. Women had no education, and only taught their daughters how they are supposed to work like a good wife. The slaves had to work all day and had to sometimes teach kids. The unlucky slaves worked in a silver mine.
Slaves were ranked at the bottom of Egyptian society. Slaves, like peasants, worked very hard. The more fortunate slaves worked in the homes of the rich. Household slaves were usually fairly treated, adequately fed and clothed. Other less fortunate slaves worked as labourers. They often were often naked and endured harsh treatment at the hands of their overseers.
Slaves who worked in the home generally had better living conditions, access to better food, and sometimes received special treatment from their owners compared to those who worked in the fields. However, they were still subject to the same brutal treatment and lack of freedom experienced by all slaves.
Because they have to worked hard so the slaves don't have to be whipped and hurt to death.
