The Flight Data Recorder collects and records data from up to 30 various parameters of the aircraft. This data can be used to investigate a crash and to study problems with the aircraft. The recorder is on a loop and it records 30 minutes (or now longer time) and then re-records over the previous data.

The computers on the aircraft collect data that is used to fly the aircraft. This data comes from sensors and proximity switches and other data from various systems of the aircraft. This data is used to report warnings to the flight crew and also to help the flight crew to make decisions on how to fly and operate the aircraft. Some of the data includes the pilot control inputs to the flight controls and engines. It also records values of sensors, switches and valves as well as the Center of Gravity acceleration. Some parts of this data is duplicated and sent to the FDR where it is recorded.

The data is typically recorded at a rate of 4 samples per second. Some is recorded at a lower rate of maybe 1 data point per second. For example, if it is recording the Fuel Quantity, it may record the amount once per second. But it will record four values of Flight Control input per second.

The FDR data can also be used to review to determine if the aircraft made a "hard landing" that is above its design load.

The Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) is another recorder that records the sounds in the cockpit and can pickup the flight crew's conversation and noises that can give clue to problems and equipment failures.

The device includes a beacon that continues to operate under water to aid its recovery.

Both recorders are orange, though for historic reasons are sometimes loosely called 'Black Boxes'. [In science and engineering, a black box is a device about which you do not need to know the internals, merely the input and output.]

Although most people still talk about a black box in fact it is painted bright orange to stand out from other parts of a crashed aircraft.

Is flight data recorder fire proof?

Nothing is waterproof, especially considering the high stresses involved in an airplane accident. The flight data recorder is water resistant. It is also designed to minimize the probability of data loss even if it does get wet internally.
