The machines can be both manual and computer operated.

Manual welding machines are normally portable and can be used to connect (weld) 2 pieces of metal, normally steel together. They doe this by melting both contact edges of the metal together to make on very strong joint.

Auto welders are more robotic. Frequently seen in the car are white goods industry, the machines are pre-programmed to place welds exactly in the same place many hundreds of time. These may be full seam weld as in a join or tack welding where spots are selected on the body to be joined and a one of spot joint is made.
