Good answer above. Just to add: At the chemical level, the water molecules that constitute liquid water H2O(l) increase in energy as they are heated which causes the velocity or the molecules to increase until the heat of vaporization (boiling) is reached.

If the temperature of the water starts at 0 degrees Celsius then the density of the water increases until a temperature of about 4 degrees Celsius after which the density decreases again. At 100 degrees Celsius the water will boil.

When water heats up, the particles get warmer and start to vibrate more. Then some of the particles escape and then turn into a gas, you might know this as evaporation!
