They help the students learn about them and be more comfortable around them, especially for the future. Also, for those parents who are too busy to set aside an hour to see how their kid is doing in school, teachers can e-mail back and forth with the parents. It's also a way for teachers to communicate with each other. Many teachers also make their own tests on the computer as well as their grades. Putting the grades on the PC is better than on paper because you save trees and it is quicker to look up certain things, such as why little Jimmy got a B- on his paper instead of the A that Henry got. Think about it. Life sucks without computers!
It depends on the type of school on how to best use a computer in class.
In my little sister's elementary school they let students do math questions on a computer in a class called PC-Math. Under supervision, elementary students can learn how to use a computer and they can test themselves and get correct answers at the end without the teacher knowing and/or grading the test results. So this can be a very useful way to help elementary students learn; especially if they struggle, they can get motivated again.
Later in high school, students can use computers to do research on certain topics and learn programming in a partly-supervised environment. Some high schools allow students to bring laptops for group projects or they may have classroom computers for that. This is increasingly being used to teach students how to retrieve information from a variety of sources on their own within little time and with few expenses (versus costly and time-consuming book research).
Students in college and graduate school usually bring their own computers to class or might get one at certain private colleges with laptop programs. These are often useful for students to read additional information about the class topic. E-books are way cheaper than the hard copy, so then students might download it to their laptop or tablet. At some colleges, instructors prepare a class script, instead of relying on a book, and they put that on the class website for students to download. In order to save printer ink and paper, students read the script on their laptops. Again research is also often required in college classes, see high school above (except that it will rarely be supervised in college).

One obvious use for computers is to conduct math drills. But computers are increasing used as a reference tool, using the internet to provide information on virtually any topic.

The uses of a computer in science are research, calculation, and database.
The first computer used in schools was a donated Apple computer in 1975. It wasn't until the 1980's that computer use in schools became wider spread.
There are many schools offering computer training and degrees in that area. Some schools are that offer computer training is University of Phoenix, ITT Tech, and MTI college.
