Alabama became a state in 1819. Its capital was Cahaba and later to Montgomery. Its population multiplied many times during the period. It also witnessed the end of the war in 1812, the Indians were defeated and there was a huge demand for cotton by the British. In 1817, the Mississippi Territory was split into the Territory of Alabama and the State of Mississippi. In 1802 the first cotton gin was built and in 1830 cotton mills were constructed. There were many economic and social changes and slavery was encouraged.
