From everything I have read about him I think Washington had a problem with self esteem. I write this because he was the second son and in his time that meant he would not inherit from his father and not be as well educated as his older brother. Despite his accomplishments I think this followed him all of his life and he feared that others would realize this about him. One event in the War of 1812 shows this very well. As a young British officer he was escorting a French diplomat when a Native American guide killed the diplomat and because Washington was in command he was made responsible for the death. This very nearly caused the war to break out, but a deal was struck that Washington would sign a confession. The confession was in French, but he couldn't read or write French ( all educated gentlemen read/wrote French) and he wouldn't admit that he couldn't so he signed papers in French that named him responsible for the death of the diplomat. This shows he felt a lacking of education and status in a time when it was needed and expected from a gentleman.

One of the things George Washington disliked was Imperialism. Another thing he disliked was giving speeches because he wasn't very good at it.
