Julius Caesar served as consul of the Republic in 60 B.C after serving in other posts including praetor and aedile. He was praetor, or governer, of Spain. After his consulship he served as governor of Roman Gaul, where he invaded the rest of Gaul and conquered it. He also led excursions into Germania and Brittania, though he did not conquer these areas. The defining battle of the Gaullic War was the Battle of Alesia in which he defeated Vercingetorix. When ordered to disband his army and facing prosecution by his enemies, he crossed the Rubicon River, which was the border of his province. By crossing the Rubicon with his army he was declaring war on the Republic. He fought Pompey the Great (Gnaeus Pompeius Maximus) in the civil war and eventually defeated him at the Battle of Pharsalus in Greece. During the civil war he was known for his policy of clemency, letting his captured enemies go as long as they promised to lay down their arms. In Egypt he met and became infatuated with Cleopatra VII Ptolemy, the young Queen of Egypt. He used his army to help her in her civil war with her brother. Back in Rome he was made Dictator, and eventually Dictator for life. He made reforms of the Roman government and reformed the calendar, giving the world the Julian calendar which was in use until the Gregorian calendar revised it. He was assassinated on March 15, 44 B.C. by a conspiracy of senators in Pompey's Theater which was serving as the senate house. Most of the people who joined in his murder were those he had pardoned in the Civil War. Caesar also wrote Commentaries on the Gaullic War and the Civil War, which are regarded as models of both history and Latin writing.

Well Caesar could do anything he wanted to because he had the people on his side. He wasn't even an official king but he was so popular that no one cared. Caesar built a man made bridge to invade a country. i can't remember it from the top of me head but im doing a project on Roman Empire right now so i hoped this helped a little bit because this is a topic with alot of info. And he helped stop crime, unemployment, and hungriness.
