Nuns took a vow of stability in their monastery for their entire life, and never left the compound. I would assume that the only thing that could have done to assist public health was that they didn't go out in public and spread or catch disease. Aside from which, I'm not real sure that there was any kind of "public health" outside of plague houses in the Middle Ages.
