Why can't we see carbon in living things?
Can't we? Most of the things you see about organisms contains carbon. Obviously, we cannot see individual carbon atoms, but fat, sugar and protein all contain carbon atoms.

Yes. We can see atoms, cells, viruses, bacteria...
