Why did the American colonists have to be self reliant?

Everybody has to be self reliant, whether today or 300 years
ago. The difference between then and now is there were no well fare
checks coming from the King George to help the colonists in their
troubles. The colonists instead sent King George well fare checks
in the form of taxation. As self reliant as they may have been, the
colonists did rely on England for military support and the sort of
things people rely on governments for.
