In the Sikh religion, baptism (amrit sanchar) is an initiation that can be gone through at any age. Once they have taken amrit sanchar, they are known as an amritdhari. After becoming amritdhari, the men change their surname to Singh, and the women change their surname to Kaur. These mean lion and princess, and are to help represent their rebirth. They gain the privilege of being members of Guru Panth, and potentially becoming part of the Sikh collective religious authority.
