There are two main characteristics of the chromosomes that are the most useful in matching homologous pairs. These two are size and viz.

Polyploidy allows the formation of new species derived from different ancestors. Polyploid is the condition in which an organism has extra sets of chromosomes.
In sexual reproduction, traits are determined by the alleles of an individual's genes inherited from their parent's cells after it has undergone meiosis. The alleles of the parents are randomly selected depending on the chromosomes of the sperm and ova which connect. The 24 pairs of resulting chromosomes in a new individual's cells (half from both parents) determine their traits as each chromosome with DNA and gene segments have traits. Whether the traits show up are resulting to the dominance of the alleles from the inherited chromosomes.
Japanese Maples are openly pollinated in nature via wind, birds, insects, etc. However, they have the ability to self pollinate, which is useful in maintaining specific physical characteristics.
Karyotypes are chromosome maps evaluated for gross genetic defects such as extra or missing chromosomes or large translocations between chromosomes. Many of these gross genetic defects are non-viable, meaning the fetus will not survive to the point of birth, but a few can be viable (think trisomy 21 [Down's syndrome] and fragile X syndrome). With this information, parents can either prepare themselves mentally and emotionally for the potential life-long complications or can choose to terminate the pregnancy.
Chromosomes are are your genetic material. Without them you would not exist.
There are many characteristics that can be seen of useful information. Useful information is something that is helpful or relevant.
Triploid organisms are normally sterile as their lack of homologous chromosomes prevents pairing during meiosis. This can be useful to plant breeders, for example in banana cultivation: sterile triploid bananas can be propagated asexually and will not contain any seeds.
Relevance: Information should be directly related to the purpose or task at hand. Reliability: Information should be accurate and trustworthy. Completeness: Information should be comprehensive and provide a full picture. Timeliness: Information should be up-to-date and available when needed.

farm animals are very useful because it gave us nothing
gm foods are made by scientists in a laboratory by mixing genes and chromosomes. hope this was useful :)
