Electrostatic forces The electrostatic force, is the repulsive force which acts between the positively charged protons. This is because like charges repel. (You can see this in action if you place 2 magnets with the north poles facing one another and try to move them together.) The strong nuclear force, is a short-range force, which acts to hold the nucleus together. As the number of nucleons (neutrons and protons) increases, so does the strong nuclear force.
