The three parts to a written temperature are :

  • the numeric value, positive or negative
  • the degree sign (except for Kelvin)
  • the letter indicating the temperature scale (C, F, K, R are the most common, for Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin, and Rankine. Less common scales include N, D, Re, and Ro for Newton, Delisle, Réaumur, or Rømer)
