For all elections, except local elections, the polls must be open from 7 am to 8 pm. If you are in line at the polls by 8 pm, you are entitled to vote.

The 2010 Election in MA
This is a special election- it involves the selection of a senator to complete the term left open by the death of Ted Kennedy last summer-The race was between Democrat Martha Coakley or Republican Scott Brown.
Scott Brown is the Victor- ending a super majority of Democrats in the Senate.
In Massachusetts, for the 2010 General Election on November 2nd, the polls open at 7:00 am and close at 8:00 pm. Some polling places may open earlier than 7:00 am. If you are in line at the polls by 8:00 pm, you are entitled to vote.

In California, for the 2012 General Election on November 6nd, the polls open at 7:00 am and close at 8:00 pm.
The polls in New York close at 9:00 pm. In most other states they close earlier, usually at 7 or 8.
I think that they close at 5pm because that's the normal working day. I guess.
In Wisconsin, for the 2010 General Election on November 2nd, the polls open at 7:00 am and close at 8:00 pm.
